JOB INTERVIEW QUESTION: DO YOU HAVE A DOG?

thumbnail_IMG_1052 2

I really want a Catahouls Lepard dog

It sounds completely crazy to ask a question like that in a job interview. But every now and then I do just that.

It is said that:

“When children learn more about dogs and get to spend time with them, they develop empathy and respect for animals, nature and other people increases.”

Working in an industry with many people means we have to wear our hearts on our sleeves. And we need to have empathy, and the ability to visualize the situations of others. Whether they are customers or employees.

If I’m unsure about a candidate during a job interview, I sometimes decide to ask: Do you have a dog?

There’s naturally nothing wrong about having a cat or a rabbit.

But talking a little about why you do or don’t have pets can be a useful way of getting to know people. I grew up on a farm with goats, cows, horses, rabbits, a cat and a dog – and I’ve always had dogs. Big and small.

Right now, I don’t have a dog for practical reasons and because I travel a lot. And I miss it every day. When I get home and open the front door, and there is no dog to meet me, my heart sinks.

That’s why I’m getting a dog this Christmas. It’s at the top of my Christmas list – just like it did when I was 9 years old and got my first dog, a poodle called Winnie…
